What Our Customers Say

Miroslaw Zawadka
We’ve been working with Rafal for the past two years, and I couldn’t be happier with his services. He’s incredibly reliable, always professional, and takes the time to explain things in detail. One of the best parts is that he speaks both Polish and English, which makes communication a breeze. Highly recommend him for anyone looking for an experienced and trustworthy accountant!

Damian Liszka
I have been using the Tax Accounting Group for over one year. I am very pleased with the professionalism of Rafal’s services. He is very knowledgeable and has a lot of passion for his work. As a small business owner I highly recommend the Tax Accounting Group to anyone who wants outstanding tax services.

Raf has been taxing care of my company’s tax for the last few years. A big positive change from the previous two tax agencies I had tried. Raf takes a personal, hands-on attitude – I feel as though he treats my company accounting as though it were his own. Raf is extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

It was such a relief for me to let Raf do all of my tax return in the past few years. There is alot of thing I don’t know about doing a proper tax return. Since I used Raf’s service, I received a much bigger return that I had previously. One less thing to worry about every financial year: check!

Cuba Daniel
I’ve been through several different accountants in the past and no other accountant put so much time and effort into understanding my family businesses including our complex family business structure than Tax Accounting Group and Raf in particular. My family had overdue returns, my businesses had messy accounts (despite paying bookkeppers) and I always felt like I was overpaying my taxes. Raf and his team not only brought all my accounts up to date and prepared all my outstanding business returns but Raf also made sure I understood what he was doing. He even found some errors in my already lodged tax returns and amended them saving me a couple of thousands! Raf is very responsive and would always promptly answer every question I had. He knows his stuff and is very easy to talk to. Thank you for your hard work!

Adrian Taylor
I have used Raf for my personal tax returns over the past couple of years. He is extremely helpful and knowledgeable regarding the process and made suggestions on things we could claim for that my wife and I never even considered previously. I have typically taken a DIY stance when it came to tax returns prior to going through Tax Accounting Group; though this often meant i only got to claim back a couple of hundred dollars in previous years. This time i got a $3000 refund and last year $2500. So for the price I paid for engaging Raf to do my last couple of tax returns, it was worth it many times over. Definitely recommend others to use them and in doing so support this local small business.
Your flight is booked, your work has moved, your family plans have changed, or you have been living between two countries long enough that the tax question can no longer be ignored.
Am I still an Australian tax resident?
Do I need to report overseas income?
Does Australia still care about my bank accounts, property, wages or business activity overseas?
What happens if another country also treats me as a resident?
I’m Rafal Slowinski, Director of Tax Accounting Group Pty Ltd. I help individuals, business owners and families in Sydney work through tax residency questions when life no longer fits neatly inside one country.
Tax residency advice is not about guessing based on your passport, visa or number of flights. It is about looking at the facts that show where your tax position may sit.

The Details Rafal Looks For Before Giving Residency Advice
Rafal Slowinski is a highly accomplished tax specialist and the Director of Tax Accounting Group Pty Ltd. He holds a degree in Accounting and Tax Law from the University of New South Wales, and his work has focused on helping Australian business owners and taxpayers understand complex tax issues in a practical way.
He has partnered with more than 2,000 businesses, delivering tailored accounting solutions and sophisticated, compliant tax minimisation strategies. His proactive approach focuses on identifying hidden efficiencies, safeguarding wealth and helping clients solve serious financial and regulatory challenges.
For residency advice, I want to see the movement of your life, not just the movement of your calendar.
Where are you living? Where is your family? Where is your work performed? Where are your assets? What country pays you? Where are your bank accounts, property, business interests and personal ties? Did you leave Australia permanently, temporarily or with a plan that changed halfway through?
Those details help build a clearer picture before we decide how to approach the tax position.

Leaving Australia Does Not Always End The Tax Question
Many people assume that once they leave Australia, Australian tax automatically stops applying.
That assumption can be risky.
You may still have a home, spouse, children, business, investments, superannuation, bank accounts, property or future plans connected to Australia. You may be working overseas but still returning regularly. You may have left for an extended contract or planned a permanent move that became temporary.
I help you put those facts in order.
The advice may look at your departure date, living arrangements, work contract, family ties, accommodation overseas, assets retained in Australia, income sources and whether Australian tax returns still need to include foreign income or Australian income.
The question is not simply “where are you today?”
The stronger question is “what does the full pattern of your life show for tax purposes?”

Returning To Australia Can Also Create A Tax Shift
Residency issues do not only happen when someone leaves.
They can also arise when someone comes back.
You may have overseas wages, a foreign pension, offshore bank accounts, overseas property, foreign tax paid, investments or a business interest that existed before you returned. You may become an Australian resident again partway through a financial year, which can make the return more involved.
I can help review what changed when you returned and what income or assets may need attention from that date.
This can also include checking foreign tax records, whether overseas income needs to be reported, whether a foreign tax offset may be relevant and whether capital gains tax issues should be considered for assets held overseas.
Returning to Australia can feel like a personal move. For tax, it can also be a reporting change.

When Two Countries Both Seem To Have A Claim
Dual residency is one of the most confusing situations for clients.
You may be treated as connected to Australia while another country also sees you as a tax resident under its own rules. That can happen when work, family, property, business or time spent in each country overlap.
In those situations, the next step is not to panic or choose the answer that feels cheaper.
The facts need to be organised carefully. We may need to consider the other country involved, the type of income, tax already paid, any double tax agreement issues and what evidence supports your position.
If another adviser overseas is involved, I can work with them so the Australian side is not handled in isolation.

Overseas Income Needs The Residency Question Answered First
Foreign income advice becomes much clearer after residency is reviewed.
Wages, contractor income, pensions, rental income, dividends, interest, capital gains, business income or trust distributions from overseas may all need different treatment depending on your Australian tax residency position and the country involved.
I can help you understand what documents are needed before the return is prepared.
That may include payslips, foreign tax summaries, rental statements, bank interest records, dividend statements, property sale documents, visa details, travel dates and evidence of tax paid overseas.
The paperwork is important, but the residency position comes first. Without that, the return can be built on the wrong assumption.

ATO Questions About Residency
Sometimes the issue arises through an ATO letter or review.
The ATO may ask about your travel pattern, foreign income, overseas work, Australian ties or why a return was prepared in a certain way. When that happens, the response should be based on evidence, not a quick explanation from memory.
I can help review what the ATO is asking, gather the relevant tax and residency information and prepare the Australian tax position more carefully.
If the question relates to prior years, we can also look at what was lodged, what changed and whether corrections may need to be considered.

Start With The Date Your Life Changed
If you need tax residency advice in Sydney, start with the date something changed.
That might be the date you left Australia, returned, started overseas work, moved family, rented out your home, sold property, changed visa status or began earning income in another country.
Bring the timeline to Rafal, and we can work through the residency issue from there.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Citizenship and visa status can be relevant background, but tax residency looks at broader facts such as where you live, work, keep family ties, hold assets and maintain connections.
Possibly. The answer depends on your Australian tax residency position, the type of income, the country involved and whether foreign tax was paid. Rafal can review those facts before the return is prepared.
Travel dates, work contracts, visa details, accommodation records, family location, Australian and overseas assets, income records, foreign tax documents and details of when your plans changed can all help.
Yes. Rafal can review the ATO request, organise the relevant facts and help prepare a clearer response based on your travel, income, family, work and asset position.
